Makeup Update

Before moving to Hawaii I solely used Mary Kay products.  I was a consultant at the time and really loved (and still love much of) the lineup.  When I moved, for several reasons, I decided to check out some other skin care and makeup lines for the first time in a few years and thus this blog was born.  While it’s transitioned, and continues to evolve into other topics I still have a love of all things beauty and want to give you all an update on some of my current favorites.

I have been checking out some new products and trying to consolidate my routine into a quick and easy 5 minute face.  Things I refuse to leave the house without:  eyebrows, blush, under eye corrector and mascara.  Everything else is negotiable.

Face

Foundations:  I am currently loving Too Faced Born This Way foundation.  It’s lightweight, the color match is perfect, and it’s helped improve my skin texture and tone.  The coverage is medium and buildable.   Not since my MK days have I repeatedly bought the same foundation.  About a month ago I bought my second bottle of this.  I will say that if you have uber oily skin, you may want to get a sample of it to see how it works with your skin type.  My skin has been more normal than oily so even in the heat this stays put.

CC Creams:  I am on the hunt for something I can throw on over my primer (Benefit Porefessional is my go-to).  I am playing with Arbonne Intelligence CC Cream as well as bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream.  The Arbonne product is a medium coverage and there are limited shades which makes it harder to match.  The consistency is a little heavier as well so I feel like I need to use a foundation brush to get an even coverage.  Complexion Rescue is much lighter but still provides a good coverage.  I like that a tiny bit goes a long way and I have quickly put it on with my fingers which saves even more product (make sure your hands are clean!!).  The verdict is still out on which one I will prefer on those days when I need to get ready in a quick minute.

Blush:  My favorite is Julep Glow Pore Minimizing Blush in Peach Bellini.

Concealer/Corrector:  Japonesque Color Velvet Touch Concealer and the NYX Color Correcting palette.  Mary Kay also just launched a new line of liquid concealers along with an under eye corrector that I am looking forward to trying!

Eyes

Brows: For awhile now I have been loving the MAC brow pencil in Lingering.  Recently I got the itch to try Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pomade again.  I changed up the shade this time to the soft brown instead of medium brown and I am liking it much better.  I will say that I am much faster with the pencil though.

Shadow:  I have a limited edition 4 shade palette in Chai Latte from Mary Kay that is my quick and easy go-to when I am in a hurry.  It’s a great neutral that I can wear at any time.

Liner: I have recently fallen in love with Kat Von D Tattoo Liner but when I am in a hurry this long lasting liquid formula is not forgiving so for those grab and go days I prefer a pencil.  Motives or NYX have been great options.  I personally greatly dislike gel pencils.

Mascara:  I’ve been using Benefit Roller Lash for awhile and I really like it.  It adds length, volume, curl, and still looks natural.  Another item I can’t wait to get my hands on is the new Mary Kay Lash Intensity Mascara.  Instagram some pictures…it looks AMAZING!

Lips

I am typically a balm or gloss girl.  With my lips being so chapped recently, regular old vaseline has been the only thing that has helped.  I did recently get Julep Tinted Lip Oil Treatment in Obsessed (red) and I have to say it’s my new favorite thing.  It acts like a lip stain without drying out your lips, it’s super sheer so it’s not as bold as a lipstick, lasts for a long time and the best part is that it’s not sticky at all.  I plan on getting it in Covet as well (pink).

So, there are my go-to items.  When I am in a rush, I don’t use everything but I have gotten this routine down to a pretty short timeframe.

What are your must have items?!

Last week one of my favorite bloggers, Cara of Maskcara.com, posted a challenge. The prize is a capsule of her must haves. It’s pretty awesome!  Check out her “Get Swift” post from the 8th. The challenge was to complete your makeup within the timeframe of a Taylor Swift song. I absolutely adore her (both Cara and Taylor) so I was in!

Well, let me tell you first off that I learned from the best of them how to fall in love with the snooze button and get up and out the door in 10 minutes. Thanks Mom!  So I thought I had this in the bag.  Boy was I wrong! Somewhere along the way I completely lost that talent. I guess I should have known given that I’m always in a rush in the mornings doing half my makeup in the car…sigh.

I only had one shot to film this with my crazy schedule. I took about a minute to put in front of me what I planned on using and hit record. If you checked out my Instagram page, you’ll have seen how nonexistent my video editing skills are…or my video skills in general for that matter.  Ha!  Even with more time, they aren’t much better here, hence the lack of sound (unless you like pretending you are a Peanuts character at school).  It’s ok to laugh…I did 😉

Products used:
Benefit POREfessional
Motives Custom Mineral Foundation
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz
Urban Decay Naked on the Run Palette for eyes and cheeks
Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit
Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara
NYX eyeliner in black
Velvet 59 in Noisette Lip Gloss

In the coming weeks I will post a real “get ready with me” video.  How long does it take you to get ready?!

CC+ Naturally Pretty Palette

Highlight and contour plus blush, oh my!  You may or may not know that I have been on the hunt for a matte highlight that is light enough for my skin, which isn’t so fair, but apparently fair enough that it’s been near impossible to find what I am looking for.  I have also been on the hunt for products/palettes that multitask and condense my makeup kit as I travel.  Enter the IT Cosmetics CC+ Naturally Pretty palette.

FullSizeRender

The packaging is a really pretty silver-y color and it has a mirror that almost fills the lid of the palette.  Each powder contains anti-aging ingredients (score!) and the size of each powder is generous for only $38.  The powders:

IT’s Your Color-Correcting Brightener!:  While I was looking for a highlighter, this does the trick to even out some of the underlying redness that I have.  It’s just enough to give me a little bit of highlight and blends wonderfully.  The flecks of colors within the powder help to counteract pigmentation in your skin leaving it radiant.  Then I can add just a bit of shimmer highlight at the top of my cheekbones.

IT’s Your Naturally Pretty Blush!:  This is a new go-to!  It’s very pigmented but blends in so smooth.  It has a little orange/melon undertone to it, which works great with my skin tone.  I haven’t had the chance yet to try it on anyone else with a different skin tone so I look forward to seeing how versatile it is.

IT’s Your Perfect Warmth Bronzer!:  When it comes to this bronzer, the verdict is still out.  I really wanted to use it for more of a contour powder to save some space in my kit but while it looks rich in the packaging, I have to use a lot of it to see even the tiniest bit of bronze.  Granted, it’s not meant to be a contour powder, it’s meant to be a bronzer…but still.

Overall, I really like this palette.  While the amount of product is generous, the size is still compact enough to fit in your kit and leave room for plenty of other goodies.  Since Sephora doesn’t carry IT Cosmetics (and Hawaii doesn’t have an Ulta) I went to Ulta while in California last month to pick this up.  It’s my first foray into the brand and I am looking forward to trying out other IT Cosmetics items.

What IT Cosmetics item should I try next?!
